Summary of Yahoo Photos Alternatives
It’s not news that Yahoo Photos is closing down on September 20, 9pm. I tried searching for a summary of the options to make a decision, but couldn’t find one easily through Google. I’m posting my research here and hopefully this post will show up for other people searching like I had done:
Each of the official alternatives for migrating your photos to Yahoo Photos are listed below along with whether they include space limitations or purchase requirements. In summary, only one comes out as completely free (for now) and unlimited, which is what this dealraider is looking for.
1. flickr - Yahoo’s other photo site. It is popular, but the free account has some strict limits on uploads:
* 100 MB monthly upload limit (5MB per photo)
* 3 sets
* Photostream views limited to the 200 most recent images
* Post any of your photos in up to 10 group pools
* Only smaller (resized) images accessible (though the originals are saved in case you upgrade later)
If you like paying, $24.95/year will get you the Pro account which removes the limits.
2. Photobucket - States that you get storage for 10,000 photos, thus it is limited but with a relatively large limit. However, if you take a ton of photos, you may hit these limits.
3. snapfish - unlimited, but requires a purchase every 365 days to keep your account activated. You could probably find a purchase that is only a couple of bucks in total, making this option effectively a couple bucks a year to keep, plus you’ll get whatever you order once a year.
4. shutterfly - This is the option for the dealraider. Currently, it has unlimited storage and no mention of upload limits. They do say that they reserve the right to cancel an account that is inactive for 180 days (after a warning email which you can respond to), but as long as you respond to the email it seems you are fine. In addition, they are offering a pretty valuable promo for people who switch to them, a free 8×8 Photo Album.
5. Kodak Gallery - Same idea as snapfish, with unlimited photo storage, but requires a purchase every 12 months to remain active or they may delete your photos (and they will, I’ve had it done to me before!)
